Arlington Partnership for Children, Youth & Families
November 18, 2013

Teen Network Board Highlights & Conversation
Tyler Laredo and Anna Tramposch gave us some highlights from the TNB:
Drugs and Alcohol
- They are preparing to meet with PTAs to present a similar Mythbusters program to parents
- They work with the other committees to support them/get the word out about their events.
- Continue to post blog posts and job opportunities
- Volunteer Fair was on Nov 9th
- Promoted to all schools (via announcements & flyers)
- 16 organizations were present
- 101 teenagers attended, 50 adults with teens
- 175 people total attending event (including vendor volunteers & TNB members)
- ~60% high school students, ~40% middle school students
- Most people heard about event from a parent, online/email, or through a friend
- Once trained (5-day completion), school will use you as a leader in emergency situation and talk in the community about emergency preparedness setting up activities
- This first year is a PILOT PROGRAM at Yorktown
- Establishing social media (FB, twitter), distributing promotional materials (paid for by $1000 grant from Arlington Community Foundation)
- Partnership with Arlington Co. Office of Emergency Management (Grelia Sols)
- 1st training meeting Nov. 25, 2013
- VEST (Volunteer Emergency Support Team)
Peer to Peer
Lysa Diarra and Kate Grumbles, the co-chairs of the Peer-to-Peer Committee shared information on two activities they have been involved with:
- Anti-Gang Task Force Soccer Tournament
- Committee members led table discussion during lunch that focused attention on empathy. TNB members asked questions and demonstrated their own strengths through their participation.
- Out of School Time Conference
- TNB members participated in two ways –
- The Workshop was for student leaders to learn more about the Care for a Change initiative and how they can implement ideas in their own schools
- part of panel for parents and a workshop for teens
As a group
- Martha’s Table – making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on December 3rd for Martha’s Table. If you are able to donate jars of peanut butter or jelly, a loaf of whole wheat bread, or money to support this effort, please contact Kim Durand by December 2nd.
- Coat Drive – we donated coats to Nauck Community Services Center.
- 3 TNB members are applying for the Greater Washington Leadership program-It’s free once a month from Jan-June(Fridays).
About Us – Cultural Shifts & the Assets Conference
Each month, we want to spend at least 15 minutes on a particular aspect about APCYF. This month, we wanted to talk about the Cultural Shifts (see attached) and how various activities have helped support the shifts. In particular the Out-of-School Time Assets Conference.
Youth participated as resources, they were valued for their work, there was youth voice throughout the conference and during the world café discussion.
There was a sense of shared responsibility throughout the conference that we weren’t necessarily meeting to talk about MY child, but OUR children.
Several members emphasized that the cultural shifts should be more about action, less about activities. That through redundancy in our messaging we can get to a unifying vision, and that we need to continue to engage with youth in their work.
Question – How do we reach the kids who haven’t been reached?
Other discussions –
APCYF is starting Early Childhood Committee led by Mary Ann Moran.
Cintia Johnson thinks about the APCYF impact pointing out Second Chance, our use of data to build capacity and a way to align resources, and that we (through the TNB) recognize the power of peer-to-peer work.
All of this, along with the Cultural Shifts, supports the APS Strategic Plan Goal 5 – The Whole Child.
The question of how systemically do we address issues comes up. For example, APS is looking at Fairfax and the County’s Juvenile Justice Office using Restorative Justice as a method to address issues, as a way to be proactive to keep kids healthy.
Siobhan Grayson shared information from a recent conference she went to on Bullying and what she heard about Trauma Informed Care. John Andelin pointed out that poverty is considered a trauma. How could we/should we be addressing this issue?
Arlington Economic Development Reflection
We wanted to wrap-up any thoughts from October presentation by Terry Holzheimer regarding Arlington’s Economic Development.
His presentation suggested to us that perhaps we need to protect family housing and the diversity that our community touts.
Mary Rouleau had some statistics and information regarding housing:
The Alliance for Affordable Housing is focusing on educating our community around the issue and why everyone should be paying attention.
Currently, you need to be wealthier to pay your rent or you have to have 2-3 families in one unit.
Recommendations include making better use of public land.
Mary shared information on the data around Garden Style Apartments, which shows their value in our community.

Advocacy Discussion –
The housing discussion led nicely into our Advocacy discussion. Barbara Gomez had a worksheet that included several issues that could be considered:
- School Nurses – reinforcing the need for the full-time nurse at Carlin Springs
- Dedicated Nurse for Career Center, Arlington Mill and Teen Parent Program.
- Early Child Care – this is something that the Early Childhood Committee will be looking at.
– there is no other group community wide that is working on this age range or the need for affordable child care, training for providers, etc.
- Housing – Affordability and diversity in Arlington.
- Out-of-School Time Issues including space in schools, outdoor space/fields, transportation.
– All three fields at Williamsburg will be used during construction, so there will be no outdoor recess and less green space.
- Growing population – has the County been planning with APS for the increases in population that are expected?
- Hiring Slowdown – are there programs that are suffering?
- Pediatric Obesity – how are we supporting our children 0-5?
– Suggestion to look at the Urban Agriculture Report on community gardens, healthy food options, and farmers markets to see if there is anything we should be looking into
In the coming months, we need to:
- Continue to educate ourselves on the housing and other issues.
- Gather information from APS and ACG staff to make informed decisions.
- The Advocacy Committee needs to get feedback from this group, are there other things to be added?
Rather than ask for MORE, could we ask for BETTER? Training for others, education, etc. Use studies, data and other information to make our case.
Join a Committee –
Bill Browning announced that LaVeta Logan will continue as Chair in 2014, and he will serve as Vice-Chair, but we need to develop a transition plan to succeed them. We need to engage additional members in our committee work to develop our leadership plan for 2015 and beyond. The following committees need your commitment:
- Board Development–see Linda Henderson, Bill Browning, LaVeta Logan, or Kim Durand for details. We generally meet once per month in the morning.
- Early Childhood–see Mary Ann Moran for information and meeting details.
- Retreat Planning–see LaVeta Logan or Kim Durand for details in planning for our February 1 event.
- Membership–see Bill Browning to arrange some meetings for matching up potential new members with existing slots. There will be two to three meetings between now and Januar.
- Communications–see Kim Durand for details.
